The Power of Garbage Collection would allow the Local Services Board to establish and maintain a system for the collection and removal of garbage or contract for the collection, removal and disposal of garbage.
The LSB of Searchmont is part of the Sault North Planning Area which is an unincorporated area north of the City of Sault Ste. Marie encompassing 31 townships (approximately 2600 km2). This area has a population of approximately 10,000 permanent and seasonal residents and has only two active waste disposal sites. The majority of the residents are serviced by the Havilland Waste Disposal Site.
The Power of Garbage Collection would allow the LSB of Searchmont to collect a levy or fee from the inhabitants that would be used to maintain a sustainable recycling service. The recycling program in the Sault North area has been delivered by the Sault North Waste Management Council since 2006. Residents currently contract garbage collection on a user-pay system directly with a service provider.
